Our Lagrein is barrel aged for two years and bottle aged an additional year before release, the impact is a complex wine that opens with earthy and herbal aromas, accented by notes of violet and black licorice. The palate leans into black cherry and dark, chewy tannins, evolving into subtle layers of vanilla and caramel. The mouthfeel is smooth and generous, finishing long, grounded, and quietly powerful. 100% Estate Lagrein. Barrel aged 24 months, bottle aged 12 months before release. 11.25% ABV.

We kicked off this winter’s library tastings with Lagrein! We had a veritical from 2010 through 2013 and compared to the current release from 2020. The first three vintages were from a different vineyard further south, what is now Ilahe. The 2013 is the first vintage from the estate vineyard in the Dundee Hills.
2010 Lagrein: A cool vintage, 11% ABV. I have never been to a cranberry bog before, but I imagine this is what it would smell like! Wet earth and berry nose, great acid, cranberry and spice, brambly tannins and plum. I immediately was reminded of William Carlos Williams’ poem This is just to say.
2011 Lagrein: Coolest and wettest vintage on record! 9.5% ABV We earth, more austere and less fruit on the nose than the 2010. Hint of young berry, maybe strawberries. Cigar, black tea tannins and ceder finish. Tobacco leaf, young raspberry notes with a very long finish. Deep.
2012 Lagrein: A goldilocks year in near perfect conditions. 11.5% ABV Pronounced nose, mushroom bacon and dark tar. Ripe blueberries, rich and velvety, mocha spice and cigar. This one made me hungry!
2013 Estate Lagrein: Tsunami from Japan damped an otherwise ideal growing season. 10% ABV High tone red fruits, and a bit bacony. Nose of smoked meats and spruce tree.

Last Sunday in January we tasted wines from Kiona Vineyards, Red Mountain AVA in eastern Washington.
2019 Kiona Sangiovese ($53) 16 months in barrel. Hot, wet terracotta and a little dusty on the nose. Hint of warm strawberries and spice, fennel seed finish.
2016 Kiona Sangiovese ($70) 14 months in barrel. Rich earth and a bit dank on the nose, stewed strawberry, minerality and brickish, black licorice on the finish.
2019 Kiona Sangiovese Riserva ($89) 24 months in barrel. Rich, earth nose with a velvety texture and cocoa powder. Red fruit–strawberry, raspberry with a fennel bulb spice.
2015 Kiona Sangiovese Riserva ($119) 24 months in barrel. Buillion or floral tea on the nose. Drinking like a jewel! Clarity of flavor and acid precise. Touch of meatiness.
Current Release: 2021 Kiona Sangiovese Riserva Nose of dried rose petals, violets and strawberry preserves. A little meaty with orange rind and fresh fennel bulb on the finish. 24 months in barrel.
