First Sunday Library Tastings: Winter 2022-2023

Library Barbera Tasting

Washington Barbera wine made in Oregon by Remy Wines.

We like to kick off the First Sunday library tasting series with Barbera, because we know so many of our fans miss this wine. Unfortunately, the Rosebud Vineyard ripped out their vines, so the last vintage we made was in 2016.

2013 Rosebud Barbera: Gingerbread notes, plum acid and so smooth $74

2012: Fruitier than the 2013, with lively acid and warm spice $81

2010: Much more savory, less fruit, a delicious funky earth with tomato sauce richness

2012 Barbera Superiore: This wine receives an addition year in barrel, 36 months total. The richness is intense, with plum sauce, smooth. $91

A line up of four Lagrein wine bottles with a snowy doug fir background at the Remy Wines vineyard.December Library Lagrein Tasting: Always a fun tasting, because Remy was getting her Lagrein from a different vineyard up until 2013. The differences are pretty noticeable, as the estate Lagrein is planted almost exclusively in the Jory soil that the Dundee Hills is known for, and it gives the wines a high-toned red fruit character. The Ilahe vineyard is mostly Willakenzie-type sedimentary clay, and the profile is often more dark fruit notes.

2009 Lagrein: Ripe, stewed fruit, ginger bread, anise and dates. 2009 was a hot year in the Willamette $150

2010: Cigar, smoky, rich and well-integrated. Touch of orange with some Syrah like qualities, cool vintage $136

2011: Nose of Pinot Noir, floral and pretty. Smooth and deep, then bright. Earthy raspberry with a citric finish. Coldest and wettest vintage on record $113

2013: First vintage at the estate vineyard. Deep color, rich earth nose, savory and woodsy, douglas fir and raspberries. Like drinking Oregon.

2019: Current release Dark chocolate nose, wild raspberry bramble and cedar box finish. Hints of tobacco, anise and spice. $58

2016 Kiona: Fragrant nose, stewed strawberry and tomato plant. Great acid, strawberry, orange and bricky terra cotta. Smooth $70

2012 Kiona: Deep color, really different, blood orange fruit, spices and fresh fennel bulb. Strawberry, tomato plant and brick $103

Sangiovese Library Tasting January 2022

Sangiovese Library Tasting January 2022

A bottle of the very first wine, Sangiovese, Remy made for Remy Wines. 2006 vintage, a red label with art work by Alphonse Mucha, art nouveau artist, head of woman resting her head on her hand.We appreciate all those who joined us for our first Library wine tasting of 2022! Just as we were releasing the remainder of our current release 2019 Kiona Sangiovese, we took a look back to vintages 2012, 2014, 2016 and a riserva wine from 2015. Here are some tasting notes and thoughts from these wines.

2016 Kiona Sangiovese: Fragrant nose of stewed strawberry and tomato plant. The acid was fantastic with luscious strawberry, tough of orange and bricky terra cotta finish. Wonderful texture and minerality.

2014 Kiona Sangiovese: Fuller bodied and tannic than  2016 with some of the similar notes. We felt it needed more of a rich, meaty dish to really shine. Bring out your best Bolognese.

2012 Ciel du Cheval: The vineyard is across the road in Red Mountain, but we could really detect the difference! The nose is floral with a perfume of rose or hibiscus. Rather than strawberry, we picked out notes of dates or figs and a dark flower, like violets on the finish. None of those tomoto/terra cotta notes.

2015 Kiona Sangiovese Riserva: HOT WET TERRACOTTA! Great minerality and blood orange acid with lots of ripe strawberry notes. Shows off our Old World Style and so typical of this vineyard in Red Mountain.
